A new pork pie sampling night is proving popular with the regulars at a micropub in Eccleston.
Ryan Moss (pictured) and Neil Marginson opened The Greenhaus in 2017 and the small bar has gone from strength to strength ever since, hosting regular special events and a weekly quiz. In April, they launched the Pork Pie Preciation (PPP) Society which has been a success and will now be held once every month.
Three pies are presented for blind tasting and punters mark on the 'graffiti wall' (a large roll of brown paper which anyone is free to doodle on) which one they prefer. The winner is then announced once all the pies are eaten and it doesn't take long!
The pies are delivered by Julian Campbell of Direct Poultry Supply in Inskip and donations to the pie fund cover the cost.
The pies are all from the Northwest region and the ones on offer at
May's event were from Ward's of Stockton Heath, Hallsworth Butchers in
Ormskirk and Chidswell Farm in Dewsbury.
Julian said, "People love coming to tasting nights because different pork pies vary so much. As an example, two of tonight's pies are made by machine but the third one is very traditional and made by hand, building a pastry case up around a wooden dowel and then filling it with meat."
Bar owner Ryan said, "We've had a brilliant response to the PPP. Last month's winner was Huddlesons of Windermere and tonight's top pie was from Hallsworths in Ormskirk. We're running it
for six months and then we'll have playoffs in November and December to
determine the overall winner of 2019!"
